Questa tavola
è contenuta nel 4° volume
della serie "Dinosauri" edita da Jaca Book.
Illustra una teoria elaborata dal mio collaboratore e amico Marco Signore,
paleontologo. Egli ha pensato che i Chasmosaurus belli (ma
in generale tutti i Chasmosaurinae) utilizzassero i loro scudi similmente
a come li usavano certe falangi di soldati medievali: essi serravano
i ranghi ed avanzavano contro il nemico creando un muro invalicabile.
Secondo Marco i Casmosauri usavano quindi i loro scudi non come difesa
fisica, ma come difesa "psicologica" per creare una barriera
contro i predatori. Se poi gli "scudi" dei ceratopsidi fossero
stati colorati nel modo giusto (mi sono ispirato a delle farfalle) e
mossi in modo irregolare, avrebbero anche potuto disorientare l'aggressore
(in questo caso, nella tavola, un Gorgosaurus libratus) oltre
che spaventarlo. |

This plate
has been published in the 4th
book of the "Dinosaurs" series (Jaca Book / Abbeville
Press / Larousse / Kodansha / Hanser).
It illustrates a theory by my co-worker and friend Marco Signore, a
paleontologist.
He thinks that Chasmosaurus belli (and maybe all the Chasmosaurinae)
used their "shields" as some medieval armies did: these armies
tightened up creating an impassable wall. So Marco thinks that Chasmosaurs
used their shields not as a phisical defense, but as a "psychological
defense" to create a barrier against predators.
And if Chasmosaurinae shields were coloured in the right way (in my
plate I was inspired by some butterflies), they were also able to disorientate
the aggressor (in this plate a Gorgosaurus libratus) as well
as scaring it. |
