• In alto, in volo, uno pterosauro Pterodactylus antiquus.

This plate is from the second volume of the series "Dinosaurs". You can see the whole cast from the 2nd book in scale with the outline of an average 175cm tall human being.
Compared to the problems that we faced for the first volume,
restoring a plausible ecosystem for the Solnhofen lagoons was easier but not easy. The first two books are the two volumes of the series where you can see less dinosaurs: only two species in the first three species in this one.
Here is the cast.
• Bottom left, you can see a Horseshoe Crab, a marine arthropod that still lives today in Africa and Asia. It's the protagonist of a night scene rather tragicomic ...
• At its immediate right you can see the star of the second story, the famous Archaeopteryx lithographica, recognized by the public as the "first bird". It actually belongs to a slightly different evolutionary line.
• Still more to the right Compsognathus longiceps, a small theropod who still holds the record for the smallest dinosaur ever discovered. It's the "villain" of the Horseshoe Crab night scene.
• Always right, foreground, Juravenator starki, a Compsognathus relative of which was found - a couple of years ago - the fossil of a puppy. Mine is - perhaps - the first "official" restoration of this animal in adult form in order of time . In the history you'll see it... very active.
• Beside Juravenator we have the pterosaur Ramphorhynchus longiceps, who makes an occasionally fine show in the second story.
• Behind them, big and green, the crocodile Steneosaurus. You'll see it in a... resort scene.
• Suspended in midair another crocodile Metriorhynchus: it dominates the prologue scene.
• High up in the air, another pterosaur: Pterodactylus antiquus.
When I was near the end of the work for the second book, I realized that I had "reversed" the size of the two pterosaurs of this story: I had drawn Pterodactylus big as Ramphorhynchus, while latter was small as the first. Fortunately, correcting the error was easy.
